The best laid plans of mice and Steve

Wednesday, 25 November 2015

The Minecraft server at 87cubed.net is back up, albeit in temporary accommodations - infrastructure work is on-going in the background. So, heads up, additional downtime will be needed before long. Thank you for your patience and please let me know if you have any problems.

Down for maintenance

Tuesday, 24 November 2015

The Minecraft server at 87cubed.net is down for maintenance - the bits need flux re-alignment and polariton cross-indexing. Hopefully this will go smoothly and everything will be back up and running within several hours. I'll send out an announcement when maintenance is complete.

87cubed.net gets Creative

Wednesday, 22 July 2015

I've just added a Creative realm to the Minecraft server, a separate "world" for building. In short:

  • The Creative realm is grass flatland, peaceful with no mob spawns or weather
  • You can see it on the 87cubed.net website map
  • Access is by portal under the spawn hut, or: /mv tp glacier_creaf
  • To return, use the pressure plate in the Creative spawn area, or: /home, /spawn, /mv tp glacier
  • Inventory doesn't carry over, you have a separate Creative-only inventory

In the Creative realm, there are no are building restrictions (except for the spawn area), so as always, please be considerate of others.

Not even kidding: 87cubed.net has been upgraded to Minecraft 1.8 at last

Thursday, 16 July 2015

After a very long wait, the Minecraft server at 87cubed.net has finally been updated to 1.8.7! This means there are new game mechanics to learn, new features to explore, new animals to discover, and new blocks. Briefly:

  • Much better client performance
  • Block models in resource packs: blocks with 3D features, not merely flat surfaces and X-shaped plants
  • New character look: much more customizable skin and now the Alex? slimmer player model
  • Enchanting has changed, requires lapis lazuli
  • Rabbits!
  • Banners!
  • Doors and fences look different depending upon the wood they're made from
  • Armor stands, slime blocks, coarse dirt
  • Andesite, Diorite, Granite - can either be discovered in new areas, or be crafted with nether quartz

You can read more details about the release, including lots of links to tools and descriptions of features, at the original 1.8 announcement from September: http://87cubed.net/index-2014.html#20140902a

I've tested the server, but if you run into problems, please let me know immediately!

Minecraft 1.8 and Chunky image rendering

Saturday, 4 July 2015

It's been a long time (10 months but who's counting?) since any kind of update involving the Minecraft server and I'm working to address that. Back in September when everything was up in the air, I said the server would stay at 1.7 until a viable replacement was available. Well, there is now a viable 1.8 server that should retain current functionality. I'm planning out the migration at this time and hope to have something available within a week.

Chunky image rendering! If you have ever beheld a view while playing Minecraft and thought: "Wow, that looks really great," then looked at the screenshot later and thought, "maybe?" - let Chunky put the magic back into that scene for you! Even if you've not heard of the Chunky Minecraft mapping and rendering tool, you may have seen the work. It can produce stunning images from otherwise normal views; a sample is available at the Chunky website: http://chunky.llbit.se/gallery.html

A gallery of 87cubed.net renders is available at the Gallery page

Make no mistake, Chunky can produce wondrous images, but the better/larger images can take a long time to render, and most people don't want to tie up their desktop computers for hours or days at a time for such an effort. This is where 87cubed.net comes in. There is plenty of spare CPU capacity on the server, so I would like to offer that up for renders of 87cubed.net members.

How this works
  • Read the Render Help page
  • Find a view and line it up the way you would like it rendered (may require pillaring with dirt to get the angle right)
  • For each view you'd like rendered, send screenshots

PLEASE read the Render Help page before sending screenshots - I'm abbreviating the instructions here to avoid a Wall of Text. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
